Bunzey's 1st Grade Beavers
I am so excited to be starting my teaching career in Chapel Hill at Estes Hills Elementary School. This is my first year teaching. I grew up in Raleigh, NC and lived there my whole life until moving to Wilmington to go to college. I graduated in May of 2015 with a degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Behavioral Studies and a minor in Spanish. I did my student teaching in a kindergarten classroom at Ogden Elementary in Wilmington and absolutely loved it. Before I became a teacher, I worked for the A.E. Finley YMCA in Raleigh for six years. That is where I met my husband, when I was 16, and we got married on August 1, 2015. That is why my email still says Mitterling but all of my students call me Mrs. Bunzey! My husband Tyler works for UNC in the Athletics Department and also teaches 11th grade English in Wake County at Leesville Road High School.

I am excited about beginning my 14th year of teaching first grade at Estes Hills. I enjoy working with our talented, compassionate staff to prepare and implement daily routines and activities with student needs as the top priority. My goal is to guide each first grader toward being independent and responsible in work and play, and to provide opportunities for every child to deepen their love of reading, writing and learning new things. It is also exciting to expand my understanding of the Growth Mindset and help students to understand that everyone can learn and improve through effort and persistence. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you.
I received an Associate of Arts Degree in Child Development from Villa Julie College (Stevenson University) in Baltimore, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD, and a Master of Arts Degree in Child and Family Studies/Young Children from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
I have been a preschool teacher, a director of day care centers, and a substitute teacher in elementary schools. I stayed at home with my own children when they were young, and volunteered in many of their classrooms. When my children reached the ages of twelve and sixteen I became a Teacher Assistant in kindergarten and first grade at Estes Hills. In 2003 I was granted the opportunity to teach first grade, and was honored to be named the school's Teacher of the Year for 2008-2009. I have worked on numerous school, district, and state Department of Instruction committees. I love being a part of the Estes Hills community and every day I learn new things from my co-workers.
I truly love working with children and am looking forward to the new school year! My goal is to create a classroom environment that has a safe, caring and fun atmosphere. My job is to guide, support, encourage and challenge each student to reach his/her full academic potential. I strive to create lessons and activities that are engaging and hands on so the children develop a love for learning that will be life long.
Just a bit about me - My husband and I and our two children moved to Chapel Hill from New Jersey twenty- five years ago (Some people say this qualifies us to be natives of the area!) and we love it here! When I am not at school, I enjoy cooking, gardening, being outdoors, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
